When we are discussing about the speed of our computer then actually we are discussing about the speed of computer storage device known as RAM (Random Access memory). Ram is a temporary storage device of computer. RAM is a memory in which we can do both operations (Read and write). This is in a form of IC (Integrated Circuits that allows to access stored data in any order. This is a volatile memory so we have a draw back that stored information has been lost as power is switched off.

RAM is of two types SRAM (Static Ram), DRAM (Dynamic Ram). In static RAM data bit is stored in either state of a flip-flop whether in Dynamic RAM data is stored in form of charge in a capacitor. Dynamic RAM is faster than static RAM but it need refreshing time to time so an extra circuitry is needed for this purpose, so the cost is also increased. Both the Static Ram and Dynamic RAM are volatile RAMs.

In this dynamic age RAM comes in a small size just like a bunch of few chewing Gum sticks. These RAM are very easy to replace when it get damage. The upgraded form of a module is called memory module or DRAM (Dynamic Random Access memory) module. If we need to enhance our Computer speed than we need to enhance the capacity of our RAM e.g. if we have 256 MB RAM i.e. not enough for our uses than we should go for 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB which we need according to our requirement for example if we require to do only office work such as documentation, presentations etc than we don't need much RAM but if need to use play computer games, music, pictures, videos etc than we need more memory to access these features rapidly.

Once you decided to change your computer RAM, refer a technician. Don't change RAM by yourself. Go to the service center, there they will suggest you what capacity is suitable according to your requirement. They will even find out the compatibility of your motherboard.
